About Us

Helping People - Helping The Environment

BPS was started in 2003 from the desire to help make a positive difference in our world.  If we are going to spend much of our time working, why not do something that contributes to a better life for all of us?  We may not be able to change the whole world, but we can change the world around us at least.  In doing so, we have the privilege of helping people every day.  We are so honored to be able to make such a positive impact in peoples health and happiness.  Especially in their homes, which are such an important and special part of all our lives.

Respect

At Building Performance Specialists our employees come first.  We realize this is a strange thing to say to our customers.  You typically hear companies say that their customers come first, but many times the employees come second, or third, or fourth...  We feel that by putting our employees first, by treating them with the respect and dignity they deserve, they will naturally extend that same respect to our customers.  No need for reminders, trainings, programs, or other artificial means of coaxing our employees to treat our customers the way we want them to.  You can expect to be met by a happy friendly person who treats you with respect and courtesy because that is how they feel they are being treated while working with us.

Certifications

We carry many certifications including RESNET/HERS Energy Rater, NAHB Green Verifier, BPI Envelope Specialist, BPI Building Analyst, BPI Air Sealing & Insulation Technician, BPI Trainer, Passive House Rater, Green Built North Carolina Rater, Duke Energy Progress Home Energy Improvement Contractor, and Duke Energy Progress HERO Raters. You can find more information on these programs here.

Feel free to call the office or shoot us an email for a free consultation, where you will speak with a friendly customer service representative trained to walk you through exactly what sort of work we do on a day-to-day basis to improve homes like yours, as well as what energy efficiency rebates and tax credits may be available in your area. We look forward to hearing from you!

Who We Are

Home Performance Contractor

Skye Dunning founded Building Performance Specialists in 2003 while still the owner operator of a computer service & repair company.  The motivating factor for the change was to be "one more person making a difference".  With Skye's background in systems and diagnostics, building science was a perfect fit and BPS got very busy very quickly.  Skye also served on the board of directors of the Cape Fear Green Building Alliance (CFGBA) from its inception in 2005 through 2008, and was chairperson for 2007 & 2008.  Skye also spent time as a BPI trainer & proctor for BPI certifications and regularly presents on building performance topics at national and regional building science conferences, green building organizations, and industry groups such as home builders, home inspectors, AIA, etc.

When not working, thinking about work, speaking about work, or traveling for work, Skye can usually be found fixing something, having fun with the family, visiting friends around the country, or riding his motorcycles.

With a love of spaces and buildings, Danny Morrow pursued architecture and graduated with an associates degree in architectural technology from Cape Fear Community College.  While Danny enjoyed technical aspects of his work, but he really wanted a chance to impact buildings in a green sense.  As a refugee from the drafting world, Danny found energy modeling and HVAC load calculations were a natural progression for him.  This technical office work is balanced out by field inspections and testing.  Fortunately Danny is a Southern boy (originally from Arkansas) who doesn't mind the heat!

When Danny is finally done designing or helping builders, contractors, or homeowners on site, he'll usually be surfing or brewing excellent beer.  And he want's to be sure to point out that there is actually clear tape covering what looks like open louvers in the fresh air ventilation system he's testing in this picture!
